The popularity of the slogan, a catchy play on words about the beauty one will find in
Ithaca and the surrounding towns, is due in large part to the generosity of its creator. Local
adver sing guru and Cornell University alum, Howard Cogan coined, "Ithaca is Gorges"
in 1986. He declined trademark rights, allowing the community free use of the slogan for
promo onal purposes and to communicate the area's numerous and gorgeous waterfalls
and gorges to the masses. Over the years, use of the phrase has grown iconic and spanned
the globe. Don't be surprised if you see the green bumper s cker in China, Israel and the
UK, or if you run across someone wearing the T-shirt in California, or quite possibly your
own home town.
